# Is Janitor AI safe?

Janitor AI is 18+ only, collects your chats, and verifies age in just three countries. What its policies say about privacy, proxies and moderation.

Short answer

Janitor AI is reasonably safe for adults who treat their chats as data the company keeps, and it is not safe for anyone under 18. At this review, its policies bar under-18s, say it never sells personal data and keep payment details off its servers. It also collects chat conversations, uses collected data to improve its AI, and verifies age only in Australia, Brazil and the UK.

## Age rules: 18+ only, checked in three countries

[Janitor AI](/apps/janitor-ai)'s Terms, updated October 8, 2026, restrict the platform to users 18 and over and prohibit under-18s from using it or creating an account. Janitor AI can terminate any account it reasonably believes belongs to a minor, and misrepresenting your age is a material breach of the Terms. The iOS App Store listing, "Janitor: Interactive Stories" by JanitorAI, is rated 18+.

Actual verification covers only users connecting from IP addresses in Australia, Brazil or the UK. They complete a one-time check through k-ID with three options:

- Facial age estimation from an on-device video selfie
- An ID scan, deleted after confirmation
- An AgeKey, if already verified on Discord or Snapchat

Janitor AI receives only a yes or no on whether the user is over 18, and the ID or selfie is never linked to the account. Janitor AI says it has no plans to extend verification to other regions.

Reviewers report the following:

- Checks have applied in Australia and Brazil since April 24, 2026, and in the UK since June 15, 2026.
- Everywhere else, age is self-declared at signup, backed by what Janitor AI calls behavioral risk signals.
- There is no under-18 mode and no native parental controls.
- The mobile apps ship with NSFW content off on a fresh install. Turning it on takes a toggle in profile settings on Janitor AI's website, with no extra verification.

Reviewers writing for parents conclude Janitor AI is not safe for kids. For a household with a teenager, nothing on the platform is built for them, and outside those three countries a self-declared birthday is the only barrier at signup.

## What Janitor AI collects

Your chats are collected. The Privacy Policy, last updated September 17, 2026, lists chat conversations among the user content Janitor AI collects. It says collected information is used for research and development to improve its AI systems. Janitor AI also automatically collects device information, including IP address, browser, operating system and unique device identifiers, plus approximate location from the IP address.

The safety page states Janitor AI never sells personal data or shares private conversations with third parties for advertising or commercial purposes. It may still disclose information to comply with laws, legal processes or governmental requests.

Deleting your account does not immediately erase everything. Email and authentication metadata can remain in deleted-account records, and you can email Janitor AI to request deletion of that retained data.

## Who can see your chats

Users report chats are only public if you make them public.

The model you chat through matters more. Janitor AI permits configuring an API proxy in settings on its website or official apps. Reviewers report that a proxy sends your prompts and replies to a third party under that provider's terms, not Janitor AI's. Their advice is to stay on the in-house JLLM model if privacy is the priority, and to treat proxy or janitor+ Router chats as visible to a third party. If you wouldn't want something sitting in an outside company's logs, keep that chat on JLLM.

## Account and payment security

Payment information goes directly to payment processors with encryption and is not stored on Janitor AI's servers. Signing in with Google does not give Janitor AI your Google password or access to Gmail, Drive, contacts or calendars.

The Terms allow access only through Janitor AI's website and its subdomains, the official iOS and Android apps, or other authorized means. Using an unofficial client or modified app can get your account suspended or deleted. A proxy configured in the official settings does not count as an unofficial client.

## Moderation and banned content

Janitor AI says automated systems screen every piece of content before publication, and full-time human moderators review reported content around the clock. A report button sits on every character profile and comment, and Trust & Safety also takes reports by email. Prohibited content includes:

- Sexualization of minors, including fictional minors
- Any depiction of under-18s
- Gore, bestiality and sexual violence

Character avatars cannot contain explicit nudity, pornographic content or overtly sexual imagery.

Users describe the enforcement as blunt:

- A bot creator posting in July 2025 said they moved their bots to another platform after bans and bot deletions without warning. They added that referencing a younger sibling, child or pet in a bot could get a creator banned and all their bots deleted.
- An App Store reviewer says the age filter blocks chats with no under-18 characters in them, including chats that mention a younger sibling.
- A Janitor AI staff member replying in July 2025 said banning is a last resort. Flagged non-explicit bots get a moderator comment or are removed until edited, and ban appeals are reviewed.

Reviewers report the August 2026 changelog records a moderation-pipeline outage and chat-memory loss affecting about 15,000 chats. The same staff member said Janitor AI's status page is the central place for service announcements.

## Mental health support

The safety page lists crisis lines at this review:

Reviewers report a dedicated Suicide & Self-Harm Protocol. It states that responses are AI-generated and not a substitute for professional help, and suicidal ideation triggers a crisis referral notification.

## Money and legal terms

At this review, subscriptions cancel from Settings > Billing > Manage subscription. They stay active to the end of the billing period, with no partial refunds.

Reviewers report janitor+ Router launched on July 30, 2026. Its credits are non-refundable, can expire 365 days after purchase, and are cancelled if you delete your account, so spend them before you delete.

The Terms grant Janitor AI a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicensable, transferable license to the content you submit, though you keep ownership. They also contain an arbitration agreement and a class action waiver, so a dispute with Janitor AI goes to individual arbitration rather than a group lawsuit.
